colonist
New land inhabitant
A colonist is a person who settles in a colony—a territory claimed and controlled by a distant power.
The term applies both to early settlers who establish colonies and to later inhabitants who maintain them: The colonists struggled through their first winter.
Unlike immigrant, colonist emphasizes the extension of one nation's authority over another land, often displacing indigenous peoples.
