settler
New land inhabitant
A settler is someone who moves to a new region to establish residence, especially in previously uninhabited or sparsely populated territory.
The word carries historical weight from colonial expansion: Early settlers faced harsh winters.
In contemporary usage, particularly regarding Israel-Palestine, settler often implies contested legitimacy—someone establishing residence on disputed land: West Bank settlers.
To settle is to establish such residence, or more broadly, to resolve or come to rest.
