colonists
New land inhabitants
Colonists are people who settle in a new territory while maintaining ties to their country of origin.
The term applies both to those who establish colonies and to their descendants who continue living there: The colonists declared independence from Britain.
The word carries different weight depending on perspective—colonists saw themselves as settlers and pioneers; indigenous peoples experienced them as invaders.
