homesteader
Pioneer claiming acreage
A homesteader is someone who settles and works a piece of land, especially under laws granting ownership to those who cultivate it.
The U.S.
Homestead Act of 1862 gave settlers 160 acres if they lived on and improved the land for five years.
Today the term often describes people pursuing self-sufficient rural living: They quit their city jobs to become homesteaders in Montana.
