autochthon

Born of that soil

An autochthon is an original or indigenous inhabitant of a place—someone whose people have lived there from the earliest times rather than arriving as settlers or colonizers.

The word is formal and somewhat rare, appearing mostly in anthropological or historical contexts: The autochthons of Australia preceded European arrival by tens of thousands of years.

The adjective form is autochthonous.
