scout
Advance information gatherer
A scout is someone sent ahead to gather information—originally military reconnaissance, now extended to talent scouts searching for promising athletes, actors, or musicians.
To scout is to search or explore: We scouted locations for the wedding.
A Boy Scout or Girl Scout is a member of youth organizations emphasizing outdoor skills and character development; from this comes the informal sense of someone trustworthy or helpful: He's a real scout. (Capitalized Scout refers to the youth organizations or their members.)
