Grand Tour
European finishing school
The Grand Tour was the customary trip through Europe taken by wealthy young Englishmen in the 17th through 19th centuries as a finishing touch to their education.
Travelers visited Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice, and other cultural centers to study art, architecture, and classical antiquity.
The tradition shaped European tourism and the concept of travel as self-improvement: His Grand Tour lasted eighteen months and included audiences with philosophers in Paris. (Lowercase grand tour is any extensive sightseeing journey.)
