frontiersman

Edge-of-civilization dweller

A frontiersman is a man who lives on the frontier—the edge of settled territory, where civilization meets wilderness.

The term evokes American expansion westward in the 18th and 19th centuries: Daniel Boone was the archetypal frontiersman.

Frontiersmen were hunters, trappers, and settlers who carved out existence in unsettled land.

The word carries connotations of self-reliance, ruggedness, and adventure.
