doubloons

Spanish treasure coins

Doubloons were Spanish gold coins that circulated widely from the 16th through 19th centuries, particularly in the Americas and Caribbean.

The word now evokes pirate treasure and adventure fiction more than actual currency: a chest full of doubloons, pieces of eight and doubloons.

Informally, doubloons can mean money generally, usually with a playful or ironic tone: I don't have the doubloons for that.
