encomienda

Spanish labor grant

Encomienda was a Spanish colonial system granting colonizers the right to extract labor and tribute from indigenous people in a defined territory.

In theory, recipients were to protect and Christianize their charges; in practice, the system enabled brutal exploitation.

The word now appears mainly in historical discussions of colonial Latin America.
