Dutch East Indies

VOC's island territory

The Dutch East Indies was the colonial name for the Indonesian archipelago under Dutch rule from the early 17th century until 1949.

The colony encompassed Java, Sumatra, most of Borneo, and thousands of other islands.

After World War II and Japanese occupation, the territory gained independence as Indonesia: My grandmother grew up in the Dutch East Indies before the war.
