East Indies
Colonial spice region
The East Indies is a historical term for the islands and mainland of South and Southeast Asia, including India, Indonesia, and the Malay Peninsula.
European colonial powers used the name to distinguish the region from the West Indies in the Caribbean.
The term appears mainly in historical contexts today: the Dutch East Indies, the East India Company.
