Cartagena

Walled city, Colombia

Cartagena names two major port cities on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

The original Cartagena lies on Spain's southeastern Mediterranean coast, historically important as a naval base since ancient times.

The more populous Cartagena de Indias sits on Colombia's Caribbean coast, founded as a Spanish colonial port and now a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its walled old city and role in the slave trade.

We visited Cartagena during our trip to Colombia.
