tsars

Pre-revolutionary Russian monarchs

Tsars is the plural of tsar, the title of Russian emperors from the sixteenth century until the 1917 revolution.

The word derives from Caesar.

Tsar extends to anyone with supreme authority over a domain: a drug tsar, a media tsar.

In American government, czar (the more common spelling in the US) designates officials appointed to coordinate policy: the border czar, the climate czar.
