monarch

Hereditary throne holder

A monarch is a sovereign ruler—a king, queen, emperor, or similar head of state who typically inherits the position and holds it for life.

In constitutional monarchies, the monarch's power is largely ceremonial: The monarch opened Parliament.

The word also names the monarch butterfly, a large orange-and-black species famous for its long migrations.
