Bolsheviks

Russian Revolution radicals

Bolsheviks were members of the radical faction of the Russian Social Democratic Party that seized power in the October Revolution of 1917, establishing the Soviet state under Lenin.

The name comes from a Russian word meaning "majority," though they were often outnumbered by their rivals, the Mensheviks.

Bolshevik became synonymous with communist revolutionary, and in Western usage often carried overtones of dangerous radicalism: The senator accused his opponents of Bolshevik tactics.
