tsar

Pre-revolutionary Russian ruler

A tsar is a Russian emperor, the title used by rulers of Russia from the 16th century until the 1917 revolution.

By extension, tsar refers to anyone with great power or authority over a particular domain: a drug tsar, a manufacturing tsar.

In American government, czar is the more common spelling for appointed officials overseeing specific policy areas.

The president named a new border tsar.
