Russian tsar
Imperial Russian monarch
A Russian tsar was the emperor of Russia, ruling with absolute authority from the 16th century until the revolution of 1917.
The title comes from the Latin Caesar.
Tsars held supreme power over the Russian state and Orthodox Church: Peter the Great was perhaps Russia's most transformative tsar.
The female equivalent is tsarina or tsaritsa.
