Former Iranian ruler
A shah is a king or ruler of Iran (formerly Persia).
The title was used by Iranian monarchs until the 1979 revolution that deposed Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last shah.
In historical contexts, shah appears in titles like shah of shahs (king of kings).
The word also names the king piece in chess, from which the game's name derives: checkmate comes from Persian for "the king is dead." The shah fled into exile.
