regency
Interim sovereign authority
Regency is rule by a regent—someone who governs in place of a monarch who is absent, incapacitated, or too young to rule.
The term also refers to the period during which such rule occurs: The regency lasted until the prince came of age.
By extension, regency describes any interim governance or the territory administered by a regent. (Capitalized Regency refers to the British historical period and its style.)
