serfs

Medieval tied workers

Serfs were peasants in medieval Europe bound to the land they worked, occupying a status between slave and free.

They couldn't leave without their lord's permission and owed labor or a share of crops in exchange for protection and the right to farm.

The serfs worked the manor's fields from dawn to dusk.

The term now describes anyone in a condition of servitude or exploitation: We're just serfs to the algorithm.
