palace

Sovereign's grand home

A palace is a grand, imposing residence, typically one occupied by royalty, a head of state, or other person of high rank and wealth.

The word suggests architectural magnificence and often historical significance: Buckingham Palace, the Palace of Versailles.

By extension, palace can describe any lavish or opulent building: a movie palace, an ice palace.

In British usage, the palace often refers metonymically to the royal household or its official positions: The palace declined to comment.
