kaiser

Scored-top roll

A kaiser is a German or Austrian emperor, especially referring to the rulers of the German Empire (1871–1918) or the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The title derives from Caesar.

In American English, kaiser also appears in compounds: a kaiser roll is a round, crusty bread roll with a distinctive pinwheel pattern on top.

The kaiser roll was perfect for the sandwich. (Capitalized Kaiser often refers specifically to Wilhelm II.)
