sandbar

Shallow water hazard

A sandbar is a ridge of sand built up by currents in a river, lake, or ocean.

Sandbars form in shallow water and may be exposed at low tide or remain just beneath the surface—a hazard to boats.

Swimmers sometimes wade out to stand on sandbars: We walked out to the sandbar at low tide.
