waterman

Ferryman or oarsman

A waterman is someone who works on the water—a boatman, ferryman, or oarsman who transports passengers or goods.

The term particularly applies to those who make their living from rivers and bays: Chesapeake Bay watermen have harvested crabs and oysters for generations.

In British English, waterman historically referred to Thames boatmen licensed to carry passengers.
