snap

Quick cracking sound

A snap is a sudden, sharp sound or movement—a twig snapping, fingers snapping, a dog snapping its jaws.

To snap is to break suddenly or speak sharply: She snapped at him for being late.

A snap is also a fastener that clicks together, a quick photograph (from snapshot), and in football, the pass from center to quarterback.

A snap decision is made quickly; a cold snap is a brief spell of freezing weather.

Oh snap is an exclamation of surprise. (Capitalized Snap is the tech company; SNAP is the food assistance program.)
