beachbreak

Sandy bottom surf

A beachbreak is a surf spot where waves break over a sandy bottom rather than reef or rock.

The shifting sandbars create variable conditions—peaks move around, and the same beach can offer different waves after a storm reshapes the bottom.

Beachbreaks are generally more forgiving for beginners since wipeouts land you on sand: Pipeline is a reef break, but Huntington is a classic beachbreak.
