rails
Metal track strips
Rails are the parallel metal bars that form a track for trains and other wheeled vehicles to travel on.
By extension, rail refers to train travel generally: We shipped it by rail.
Rails also serve as horizontal barriers or supports—a handrail, a fence rail, a towel rail.
If something goes off the rails, it loses direction or control, like a derailed train.
To rail against something is to complain bitterly about it, though this verb comes from a different source.
Rails is also shorthand for Ruby on Rails, a web development framework.
