piling

Driven foundation post

Piling refers to heavy posts or stakes driven into the ground to support a structure, especially where soil is soft or unstable.

Bridge supports, docks, and buildings in coastal areas often rest on pilings—typically wooden, steel, or concrete columns sunk deep into earth or underwater: The old pier's wooden pilings had rotted through.

Piling also works as the present participle of pile: They were piling boxes in the corner.
