piers

Harbor mooring structures

Piers are structures extending from shore into water, used for boarding boats, fishing, or strolling: We walked to the end of the pier to watch the sunset.

The word also refers to vertical supports in architecture—the solid sections between windows or arches, or pillars supporting a bridge.

A buttress pier reinforces a wall. (Capitalized Piers is a given name.)
