radiation belt
Trapped particle torus
A radiation belt is a zone of charged particles trapped by a planet's magnetic field, forming a doughnut-shaped region around it.
Earth has two main radiation belts, called the Van Allen belts, where energetic electrons and protons from the sun accumulate.
These belts pose hazards to spacecraft electronics and astronaut health: The satellite's orbit was designed to minimize time in the radiation belts.
