acid
Burns litmus red
Acid is a substance with a sour taste that reacts with bases and turns litmus paper red.
The word extends to anything sharp or biting: acid wit, acid remarks.
In chemistry, acids are compounds that donate hydrogen ions.
Acid is also slang for LSD, the hallucinogenic drug: dropping acid.
As an adjective, acid describes sourness or corrosiveness: an acid taste, acid rain. (All-caps ACID is a database acronym.)
