time-of-flight

Travel duration measurement

Time-of-flight refers to the measurement of time an object, particle, or wave takes to travel a distance.

The principle underlies various sensing and imaging technologies: time-of-flight cameras calculate depth by measuring how long light takes to bounce back from surfaces; mass spectrometers use time-of-flight to separate ions by mass.

Often abbreviated TOF: a TOF sensor, TOF mass spectrometry.
