anions
Negatively charged particles
Anions are negatively charged ions—atoms or molecules that have gained electrons.
The term contrasts with cations, which carry positive charge.
In chemistry, anions migrate toward the anode (positive electrode) during electrolysis: Chloride anions in salt water move toward the positive terminal.
Common anions include chloride, hydroxide, and sulfate.
