hydrogen ions

pH scale determinants

Hydrogen ions are hydrogen atoms that have lost their electron, leaving only a proton.

In chemistry, they determine acidity—the more hydrogen ions in a solution, the more acidic it is.

The pH scale measures hydrogen ion concentration: lower numbers mean more hydrogen ions, higher acidity.

Pure water contains equal amounts of hydrogen and hydroxide ions, giving it a neutral pH of 7.
