pH scale
Measures acid strength
The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is, running from 0 to 14.
Pure water sits at 7, the neutral midpoint.
Lower numbers indicate acids (lemon juice has a pH around 2), higher numbers indicate bases (bleach is around 12).
The scale is logarithmic—each whole number represents a tenfold change in acidity.
