conjugate acid

Base plus proton

A conjugate acid is the species formed when a base accepts a proton.

In the reaction between ammonia and water, ammonia gains a hydrogen ion to become ammonium—the conjugate acid of ammonia.

Every base has a corresponding conjugate acid, and every acid has a conjugate base; they differ by exactly one proton.
