hydrogenate

Infuse with hydrogen

To hydrogenate is to combine a substance with hydrogen, typically by forcing hydrogen gas through it under pressure in the presence of a catalyst.

The process is used industrially to convert liquid vegetable oils into solid fats: hydrogenated oils, partially hydrogenated shortening.

Hydrogenation also appears in petroleum refining and chemical manufacturing.
