holed up

Went into hiding

Holed up describes hiding or taking shelter in a secluded place, often to avoid detection or wait out danger: The fugitives were holed up in a cabin.

It can also mean simply staying indoors for an extended period: I spent the weekend holed up with a good book.

From the image of an animal retreating to its hole.
