spot

Small colored mark

In the most general way, a spot is something small, somewhat round, and distinct from its background: What are those spots on your neck?

A spot does not have to exist in physical space; it often means something like position: Our team has clinched a spot in the tournament.

Spot is often used to characterize an area of something that has distinct qualities from what surrounds it: blind spot, hot spot.

As a verb, spot can mean mark (spot your bingo card) or identify (Can you spot the errors?).

As an adjective, spot has the idea of immediacy (a spot decision) or intermittency (spot checks for quality).
