rut

Boring daily sameness

Rut is two words, each expressed as a noun and a verb.

First, a groove worn by repeated passage is a rut.

If you’re in a rut, you are bored or frustrated by having to do the same thing all the time.

To rut a surface is to make a rut in it.

Second, rut is the male counterpart of estrus, the period during which males (especially deer) are sexually aroused.

Such animals are in rut or rutting.

To rut is also a vulgar way to reference having sexual intercourse.
