hashtag
Pound sign repurposed
A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by the # symbol, used on social media to categorize content and make it searchable: The post went viral after someone added #MeToo.
Clicking a hashtag shows other posts using the same tag.
Hashtags can mark topics, movements, or jokes.
The word also refers to the # symbol itself, though that symbol is more precisely called a pound sign or number sign.
