nerd
Socially awkward intellectual
A nerd is someone intensely devoted to intellectual or technical pursuits, especially computers, science, or obscure hobbies.
The word once carried strong connotations of social awkwardness and unfashionable appearance: He was a total nerd in high school.
But as technology reshaped culture, nerd has become partly a badge of honor: I'm a word nerd, Star Wars nerds.
To nerd out is to enthusiastically discuss or engage with a specialized interest.
