One-on-one correspondence
A private message is a direct communication between individuals on an online platform, visible only to sender and recipient rather than publicly posted.
Often abbreviated PM or DM (direct message): I'll send you a private message with my number.
As a verb, to private message someone is to contact them this way: Private message me if you're interested.
