gas

Molecules moving freely

The most general use of gas is to designate one of the primary states of matter: one in which molecules move about randomly and would expand infinitely in the absence of containment or pressure.

Gas is also used as shorthand for some common fossil fuels—some of which actually are gasses, such as natural gas.

In American English, the petroleum distillate that is used to power internal combustion engines (petrol in British English) is gas.

If a person has gas, they are experiencing indigestion that is accompanied by the release of gas through belching or flatulence.

As a verb, gas may mean to fuel a vehicle (gas up the car) or to subject a person or animal to a harmful or lethal gas: The shelter was reportedly gassing surplus animals.
