flammable

Catches fire readily

Flammable means capable of catching fire easily: flammable materials, highly flammable gas.

The word arose as a clearer alternative to inflammable, which some people misread as meaning "not flammable" due to the in- prefix.

Both words mean the same thing—able to burn.

For safety labels and warnings, flammable is now standard.
