unleaded

Modern fuel type

Unleaded describes fuel, especially gasoline, that contains no lead additives.

Lead was once standard in automotive fuel to prevent engine knock, but its toxic emissions led to phaseout beginning in the 1970s.

Today unleaded is the default at gas pumps: Fill it up with unleaded.

The term occasionally describes other products free of lead: unleaded paint.
