octane

Pump quality number

Octane is a hydrocarbon found in petroleum, but the word appears most often in discussions of fuel quality.

A fuel's octane rating measures its resistance to premature ignition—higher octane prevents engine knock in high-compression engines.

Premium gas has a higher octane than regular.

Figuratively, high-octane describes anything intense or high-energy: a high-octane thriller, high-octane coffee.
