diesel
Heavy vehicle propellant
Diesel is a type of fuel for internal combustion engines, heavier and oilier than gasoline, ignited by compression rather than spark plugs.
Diesel engines power trucks, buses, trains, ships, and some cars—valued for fuel efficiency and torque.
The fuel and engine type take their name from Rudolf Diesel, who invented the engine in the 1890s.
As an adjective: a diesel truck, diesel fumes.
The verb means to run on diesel fuel or, informally, to keep running after the ignition is turned off. (Capitalized Diesel is the inventor's surname.)
