chlorine
Yellow-green toxic gas
Chlorine is a greenish-yellow gas with a sharp, suffocating odor—one of the chemical elements.
It's highly reactive and toxic in concentrated form but essential in diluted compounds: chlorine disinfects drinking water and swimming pools, bleaches fabrics, and appears in table salt (sodium chloride).
The pool smells strongly of chlorine.
